Library Opens High Density Storage Facility
This issue of the Penn Library News examines Penn's use of high density storage to manage, preserve and ensure access to print collections well into the next century. Located a few blocks from its West Philadelphia campus, Penn's recently opened High Density Storage Facility has capacity for more than 2 million volumes. This article looks at options and costs that shaped Penn's storage plans, and the physical and operational features of the new Facility.

Penn Celebrates the Renovation of its Main Library
The 1998/99 academic year began with the "re-opening" of the Van Pelt-Dietrich Library Center, Penn's main humanities and social sciences library. This issue of the Penn Library News is devoted to the renovation project. It discusses the design strategies and architectural idioms used to transform a "Brutalist" building of the 1960s into a library fit for the information and study needs of the next century.

The Spring 1997 Special Issue ofPenn Library News, featuring excerpts from a symposium on the Internet held at the University of Pennsylvania on November 1, 1996. Terry Gross, host of National Public Radio's Fresh Air, moderated the discussion, whose participants included Paul Peter Evans, former executive director of the Coalition for Networked Information; Paul Ginsparg, a physicist at Los Alamos National Laboratories and creator of the e-print physics archive; James Gleick, a New York Times reporter and editor who writes the monthly column, "Fast Forward" ; and Sherry Turkle, professor of sociology at MIT and author of several books on the sociology of computers.
