Connecting to the Library

Remote Access to PennNet

ISC provides detailed information about Remote Access to PennNet, the campus network. Also available here is important information about Penn Modem Pool changes, information about "Penn Preferred Providers" of internet services, and a matrix comparing free Internet Service Providers.

Web Clients

The Library's Web site links to a rich set of scholarly resources and services. A graphical Web browser, such as Netscape, is required to make full and effective use of these resources and services from outside the Library.

Library Proxy Service

The Library Proxy Service offers Penn affiliates off-campus access to restricted Library resources and services.

Non-Graphical Clients

Telnet access to Franklin, the Library's catalog, is available at telnet://franklin.library.upenn.edu. However, Franklin via telnet does not provide self-service functions and several other features through the telnet interface.

Additionally, some of the Library's indexes, electronic journals and other resources and services, such as Academic Index and MEDLINE, are also available through non-graphical clients. To access these, use the lynx software provided on Penn email systems and connect to http://www.library.upenn.edu. Non-graphical clients may often lack the functionality of their Web counterparts.

Getting Help

A local primary computing support provider can provide more detailed assistance resolving issues about connecting to the Library's resources and services from outside the Library.
Detailed recommendations for hardware and software and other information about local support is available from Penn Computing.

ISC also provides detailed information about Remote Access to the campus network.
