II. INDUSTRY

SIC = Standard Industrial Classification Code.
The four-digit line-of-business identifying numbers are assigned by the U.S. Census Department.

NAICS = North American Industrial Classification Code System.
This is a new system replacing the SIC codes, starting with the 1997 Economic Census.

SIC, NAICS -- Should you care?
No. The Census uses codes to gather aggregate data for all products, services and establishments in a particular line of business. The latest economic census information is found using the NAICS. However, many commercial information databases, such as LexisNexis, for example, still use the old SIC codes to retrieve all the companies in a given industry. DON'T WORRY about it. Just follow this guide; you will see that getting the information you need is no problem.

Get the Economic Census: Type this URL in your browser: www.census.gov
