Researching the Health Sciences Literature

Tuesday, February 18th, 2:00pm-3:30pm
Tuesday, February 25th, 2:00pm-3:30pm

Sessions meet in the Biomedical Library
Sherry Morgan (Nursing School Liaison Librarian)

This workshop will be held in two successive sessions scheduled one week apart.

Session I will provide students with an overview of available Health Sciences resources, concentrating on Franklin, Penn's Online Catalog, and the following databases: MEDLINE (OVID and PubMed), CINAHL/Nursing, and Web of Science. In addition, construction of search strategies will be emphasized, including the use of Boolean operators and the appropriate use of keywords.

At the end of the session, a 'case' presentation, chosen from topics previously submitted by graduate nursing students, will be distributed to students as homework. Students will be expected to create search strategies based on the case in preparation for Session II.

Session II will provide students with the opportunity to discuss their findings in relation to the case presentation distributed in Session I, including how databases were chosen, and how search strategies were constructed to find appropriate citations. Additionally, students will have an opportunity to ask questions about, and to have the Librarian demonstrate research strategies for their own topics.

A question and answer period will be provided during each session, and the Librarian will offer to follow up the sessions with one-on-one or small group meetings with students who request them.
