First Library Shelf List (1829)

An undated but clearly earlier manuscript entitled "List of the Books, Maps and Charts in the University Library at Philadelphia" precedes the 1829 printed catalogue. Unlike the printed catalogue, the list's organizational principle is size of book: foli o, quarto, octavo, duodecimo. Within each size designation, the books are arranged according to the topical scheme used in the catalogue. What we seem to have here is, in effect, the first shelf list of the Library: that is, a guide to the location of the books on the shelves of the Library. It records over 800 volumes, some of which failed to appear in the 1829 volume, probably because they had been subsequently lost.
